Benedict Center
Volunteer Position: Women's Harm Reduction Program
Description: WHRP offers real opportunities for change to women in conflict with the law through a holistic, gender-specific day program in downtown Milwaukee.
In a safe, supportive environment women develop skills and abilities to create safer and healthier lives for themselves and their children.
Harm reduction allows women to change unhealthy behaviors gradually and progressively. All movement in the direction of reduced harm is positive.

Volunteer Position: Milwaukee County Jail Library
Description:
The Benedict Center provides library services at the Milwaukee County Jail under contract with Milwaukee County.
Mission
Provide inmates with a wide range of reading materials that appeal to broad and specific interests that cover a range of reading levels and that reflect the racial and ethnic backgrounds of the resident population.
Operation
The jail library accepts requests from individuals in all housing pods (units) and delivers requested materials back to the pods. A large collection of books remains in the library to fill requests and for rotation to the pods. A smaller collection is maintained on each pod. The librarian manages the entire library with the assistance of volunteers.
Book Collection
The Jail library contains 51 of the 73 "most influential African American books of the century" listed in the December 1999 edition of Ebony magazine. Altogether the jail collection totals about 17,000 hardcover and paperback books. Special book collections include African American fiction, nonfiction and biography; Islam, Spanish language and Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse.
Support
The library benefit monthly from a generous partnership with Half Price Books, which regularly donates boxes of popular paperbacks. The libraries also receive current issues of a few magazines and local newspapers donated from publishers or made available at a nominal cost.
Volunteers
The Milwaukee County Jail library needs volunteers to shop used book sales and pick up and deliver donated books and magazines. The jail needs volunteers to work in the library marking, sorting, shelving, and cataloging books (no inmate contact), as well as volunteers to rotate book collections on the housing pods, deliver magazines and requested books, and conduct book discussion groups (requires inmate contact and jail security clearance and orientation).
Always needed: Book donations and volunteer books drives. Books especially needed are African American authors and content, Spanish language, popular suspense and action novels, poetry, humor/cartoon, self-help, dictionaries, and National Geographic editions.

After each phase of programming (there are six of them) we celebrate success with a graduation ceremony. We serve a meal, we provide a certificate, we give each graduate a gift package and we cheer and carry on in a family fashion. Description:
Giving away stuff is fun and we give away tons of stuff. Every night volunteers pass out tooth brushes, razors, socks, underwear, clothing, coats, hats, scarves, gloves, tee shirts (underwear and decorator). And, like any good “guest house” we provide the linen and towels, soap, shampoo, shaving cream, tooth paste, deodorant and any other personal care items that men need. Volunteer groups also collect these items so that we don’t need to purchase them.

As any of us, our guests enjoy getting out of the house for a meal. However, when their regular meal sites close for cleaning or inventory or holidays; we serve meals. These in house meals are all prepared and served by guest chef volunteers.
Volunteer Position: Brown Bag Benevolence
Description: Every person housed in our building gets at least one bag lunch a day. If a man is working (60% do) he gets one for his workplace meal as well. And, any hungry individual who asks also gets a sandwich. We serve about 40,000 sandwiches a year. Volunteer groups from schools, churches, organizations and employees from countywide workplaces provide these brown bag meals.

Volunteer Position: Tutor
Description: Monday-Thursday, 3:00-5:00 p.m. Assist youth living in the shelter with homework and provide academic (and moral!) support to students in grades 1-12. Volunteers should be patient, respectful, and enthusiastic about learning. Most importantly, they should enjoy working with youth.
Volunteer Position: Youth Workshops
Description: Monday-Thursday, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Create and implement a hands-on, educational activity or program for youth ages 6 to 13. This can be flexible, ranging from a series of workshops over the course of several days or weeks, to a one-time only program. Examples of workshops include arts and crafts projects, cooking or baking, pet therapy, yoga, chemistry experiments, etc.
Or simply assist with evening workshops by working one-on-one with children to help them with workshop projects.
Volunteers should enjoy working with youth and be knowledgeable in the subject matter they present, as well as patient and respectful.

Spend time with families in our transitional living shelter. Play games and read stories to children under 6 years, and interact with adults by talking, playing cards, etc.
Volunteers should be compassionate, non-judgmental, and have the ability to make conversation and interact with people from all walks of life.

Provide childcare to children ages 3-12 while parents are taking GED classes at Hope House. Hope House is fully stocked with games, toys, books, and art supplies

Description: Monday-Friday, anytime during business hours
Take a project (usually related to office work) or assist Resource Development Coordinator with various tasks such as research, data entry, filing, etc.
Volunteers should possess basic computer skills, be able to work independently, and be self-motivated.
Volunteer Position: Food Pantry
Description: Tuesday 10:00-12:00, Thursday 1:00-3:00, Saturday 10:00-12:00
Greet clients to the food pantry, assist with paperwork, stock shelves, fill emergency food bags, “shop” with pantry clients, and help people choose nutritious food for themselves and their families.
Volunteers should be responsible, respectful, able to work with all kinds of people, and able to work independently. Volunteers must be 13 or older, unless accompanied by an adult.

Develop and implement an educational program for low-income and homeless adults. Programs can address life skills, job skills, or personal well-being. Examples include healthy eating, computer training, money management, yoga, etc. Be creative! Programs can take place on a one-time basis, or continue in a series over multiple days or weeks.

Friday or Saturday, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Plan and facilitate an evening of fun activities. Ideas include: art projects, science projects, movies, games, holiday decorating, etc. This works best for groups and families. Volunteers should provide necessary supplies. We look for respectful, patient, creative, and fun-loving volunteers.
Sunday Night Supper:

Put together a meal (potlucks work well), bring it to Hope House, share the meal with our guests, and then clean up.
This is a wonderful opportunity to share a meal with guests and make conversation. We ask that our volunteers be non-judgmental, respectful, patient, and enjoy working (and cooking for) people!
Neighborhood Clean-ups:
One Saturday on October or April, 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Join in the fun! Each year, between 50-100 people from the neighborhood and wider community come out to make the neighborhood a safe and healthy environment for the children that live there. Contests, drawings, refreshments, and prizes make the morning festive.
Food Pantry:
Tuesday 10-12, Thursday 1-3, Saturday 10-12
Your group can help in our food pantry by greeting pantry clients, assisting with paperwork, filling emergency food bags, stocking shelves and cleaning. This is generally a popular choice for groups.
Holiday Event:
Your group can help organize an event centered around a holiday of significance like Black History month, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Halloween, or even a local holiday like the Hope House Community Street Fair. Groups can also volunteer to help decorate the building during different holidays.
Sponsor a Day for Youth:
July-August, Monday-Friday, 9:00-3:00
Sponsor a fun-filled day for youth living in our homeless shelter. Your group would be responsible for the entire activity while also providing supervision for the activity. Some examples of activities are taking kids to a Brewers game, the children’s museum, or an IMAX movie.
Adult and Youth Workshops:
Monday-Thursday, 5:30-7:30 p.m.
